20 titres, c'est beaucoup demander à un auditeur en 2026. Mais Sk8star le mérite. La tracklist est vraiment bien répartie. Les titres les plus forts ne sont pas tous concentrés au même endroit, ça évite que le projet s'essouffle au cours de l'écoute. Les morceaux sont courts et efficaces. En privilégiant ce format, Richie Souf et Sk8star ont misé sur l'efficacité pure.
La première partie de l'album est très clairement la plus forte. Le run des tracks 2 à 8 est vraiment le plus marquant du projet : énergique, assumé, et avec une belle continuité sonore. Le titre 6, « No Compadre » - clin d'œil probable à Future -, est l'un des, si ce n'est le meilleur morceau de l'album. Les prod elles sont cool et marquantes tout le long, il s'amuse avec ces gimmicks et changements de voix qui s'enchainent tout le long... En bref, l'ADN d'Atlanta y est bien plus que présente. Une telle assurance et authenticité sur un projet aussi attendu, c'est rare, surtout dans le paysage actuel de l'underground d'Atlanta.
Twenty tracks is a lot to ask of any listener in 2026. Sk8star earns most of it. The tracklist is spread out smartly; stronger material isn't all in one place, which prevents the project from collapsing in the middle. The short, to-the-point songs help with pacing, and many of them have genuine replay value.
The first half is where the project peaks. Tracks 2 through 8 form the most cohesive run on the album. They are energetic, identity-driven & sonically locked in. Track 6, "No Compadre"—a likely nod to Future—stands out as one of the strongest. It has a heavy instrumental and dual vocal range, with Atlanta and Øway's DNA fully intact. It doesn't need to announce itself. It just hits. This kind of assurance and authenticity in a highly anticipated debut album is uncommon, especially in the current Atlanta underground scene.

L'influence de Young Thug est indiscutable dans cette génération. Comme par exemple sur le deuxième morceau, la richesse des improvisations et l'énergie brute rappellent les débuts de Thug, cette énergie qui donnait l'impression qu'il cherchait à prouver quelque chose. Sur « Muse », il va encore plus loin en y ajoutant une voix à la « Cookie Monster », similaire à celle du titre Harambe de Young Thug, ce qui ajoute un clin d'œil fun à son mentor.
Malgré ça, Sk8star ne fait rien de nouveau à Atlanta. On voit bien qu'il s'inspire de plusieurs styles (The Sex Pistols, Vivienne Westwood et des rappeurs du Sud comme Future et Thug). Ce qui le distingue, ce n'est pas l'originalité, mais la maîtrise et la régularité de son style. On le reconnaît tout de suite quand on l'entend. Et c'est l'essentiel.
Ce qui rend le projet intéressant, c'est l'utilisation de sa voix. Sk8star brille par son imprévisibilité. En jouant sur les variations et tonalités, ça rapporte une profondeur mélodique là où on ne l'attend pas. Par exemple, le track 11, « 2Sexy », en est un bon exemple. Il est plus mélodieux que la plupart des morceaux de l'album. Il explore des registres plus aigus sans que ça devienne pas naturel.
The influence of Young Thug is audible and undisguised. On track 2, the ad-lib density and raw, hungry energy recall early Thug. The kind that felt like he was proving something. "Muse" takes it a step further by incorporating a "Cookie Monster" tone similar to Harambe's, adding texture.
Sk8star isn't doing anything that hasn't already been done in Atlanta. His influences are clear, and he's not trying to hide them (The Sex Pistols, Vivienne Westwood and Southern rappers like Future and Thug). What sets him apart isn't originality, but execution and consistency. When you hear him, you know it's him. That's important at this stage.
What makes him interesting throughout the project is what he does with his voice. He shifts voices, experiments with pitch, and goes melodic when the track calls for it. You never know what kind of delivery is coming next. Track 11, "2Sexy," released ahead of the album in December 2025, is a good example. Produced by NoSaint and Sk8star, it's more song-driven than most of the album. He goes higher in his range and catches both ends of the listening audience without seeming calculated.

La deuxième moitié est un peu moins solide. Les tracks 9, 10, 12, 16 et 20 sont corrects, mais n'apportent grand-chose. L'album aurait pu être resserré à 15 ou 16 titres sans rien perdre d'essentiel. Le 19eme morceau est en revanche une belle surprise tardive, avec une énergie d'Atlanta bien présente et une référence qui fait du bien : « Black Migo Gang, R.I.P. to Scooter », une line qui rappelle toujours et montre que Sk8star sait d'où il vient. ATL HOE!
The second half isn't as consistent. Tracks 9, 10, 12, 16, and 20 are decent but don't contribute much. The album could have been shortened to 15 or 16 tracks without losing anything essential. Track 19 is a late highlight, carrying strong Atlanta energy and a pointed reference: "Black Migo Gang, R.I.P. to Scooter" that lands with weight and shows that Sk8star knows exactly where he's rooted.

C'est un projet d'une cohérence rare, porté par une maîtrise que peu d'artistes affichent à ce stade de leur carrière. Sk8star se distingue clairement de la concurrence, pas parce qu'il cherche à réinventer la roue, mais parce qu'il offre un niveau de perf que son exposition actuelle ne laissait pas forcément prévoir.
Une telle exigence montre qu'il est prêt pour la suite. La question n'est plus de savoir s'il a du potentiel, mais s'il saura maintenir ce niveau à mesure que son audience explose. C'est ce qu'on appelle un « problème de riche », et rares sont les artistes underground qui peuvent se poser cette question aussi tôt dans leur parcours.
Designer Junkie is one of the most structured and complete projects to emerge from the Atlanta underground scene. It's cohesive and well-engineered, delivered with a consistency that most artists at this stage lack. He's operating above the current underground average, not because he's reinventing anything, but because he's performing at a higher level than his current exposure suggests.
The level of structure suggests he's ready for the next step. The question going forward isn't potential. It's whether he can maintain this standard as his audience grows. It's a good problem to have, and not one that most underground artists get to ask this early.
